Projection: need to automatically qualify

Holy Cross’s résumé contains a few encouraging flashes but is dominated by damaging road results and a scarcity of signature wins, which is why the program looks like it will need the Patriot League’s automatic berth to reach the national field. The Crusaders have shown they can win away against peer league opponents with road victories at Bucknell and Fordham and they earned a neutral-site triumph over Hampton while also beating league rivals like Army and American at home, yet those positives are overwhelmed by lopsided trips to power-conference opponents in Providence, BYU and Utah and a heavy defeat at Harvard that undercuts any claim to quality wins. Those brutal losses away from home and the absence of a marquee nonconference victory leave virtually no margin for error, so the season’s remaining hope rests on catching fire in the conference tournament and knocking off familiar league heavyweights such as Colgate or Lehigh on a neutral floor or on the road.
